The goal of contouring is to create the illusion of depth and dimension by using darker shades to create shadows and highlights to create the illusion of light. Typically, contouring is used to sculpt and define the cheekbones, jawline, and nose, but can also be used to slim or widen certain areas of the face. The technique is often paired with highlighting, which is the use of lighter shades to accentuate certain features such as the cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow.

Step 1: Prep your skin
Before applying any makeup, make sure your skin is clean and moisturized.
Step 2: Choose the right shades
ick a contour powder or cream that is 2-3 shades darker than your skin tone. For highlighting, choose a shade that is 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone.
Step 3: Map out your face
Use a brush or sponge to apply the contour powder or cream to the hollows of your cheeks, the sides of your nose, and under your jawline. Use the highlighting shade to apply to the high points of your face such as your cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow.
Step 4: Blend, blend, blend
Using a blending brush or beauty sponge, blend the contour and highlight shades seamlessly into your skin. Make sure there are no harsh lines or edges.
